Bandra was once a leafy suburb of Mumbai city. In recent times it has become a vibrant yet highly dense neighbourhood, symptomatic of the crunching space in Indian metropolises. As a result, the floor space of an average household gets more and more constrained and precious. This forces some to leave the neighbourhood and move further away from the city centre. But for others it means that they’ll have to make do with less space.

While browsing through my favorite decor sites, I was pleasantly surprised to see a feature on Surajit ‘Bomti’ Iyengar’s Calcutta apartment, on Elle Decor. I remember seeing it in the Indian edition of Elle Decor sometime back, and now couldn’t resist the temptation of sharing the online pics with you. Surajit’s home has such an old world charm to it – the faded walls, colonial furniture, ceramics that seem to have been passed down from generations, rich fabrics, art work from local artists, Burma teak floors – the home is truly a treasure cave for a collector!

Situated in the urban settings, this 3200 sq. ft. penthouse of Mr. Sachin Patel is nothing more than a simple and an honest attempt to bring out the best of the space which resulted in a classic example of modernism and minimalism.

The foyer gives a hint of what to expect inside and the curiosity is well served when the specially crafted main door; with unique handle design casted in metal; opens to reveal the living room inside.

When you have a client as free-spirited as the one Shabnam Gupta, Founder of The Orange Lane had for this project, experimentation becomes key to the space. Armed with a well-chalked-out plan, Shabnam set about refurbishing the top floor of this duplex home for a young couple from a joint family. While the lower floor served as the more formal space, the top floor, with its expansive terrace area, is the more informal one, in tune with its inhabitants.

For Yatin Kavaiya and Jiten Tosar of Usine Studio, luxury lies in the understated. In a recently completed four-bedroom Vadodara residence, Kavaiya and Tosar played with tones of beige, cream, white and taupe—which served to create a clean yet curiously dynamic sense of openness. “The flat is very small, so we’ve tried to do a minimalistic concept with straight lines,” says Kavaiya, “All patterns and floral elements are also geometric.”
